2010 The Oxford American Dictionary defines displacement as follows:

• The moving of something from its place or position
• The removal of someone or something by someone or something else that takes their place
• The enforced departure of people from their homes, typically because of war, persecution, or natural disaster
• The amount by which a thing is moved from its normal position
• The occupation by a submerged body or part of a body of a volume that would otherwise be occupied by a fluid
• The amount or weight of fluid that would fill such a volume

Using these definitions as a point of departure, the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) seeks artists to submit entries to dis.place.ment, an international juried exhibition. As part of an ongoing commitment to promote challenging, innovative practices in the visual arts, this exhibition’s open framework serves as a catalyst for a multitude of approaches and media. Accepted works will be exhibited in the Monroe Avenue Gallery of UICA, from April 2–July 31, 2010.

Pernod® Absinthe was founded in France, at the beginning of the Belle Epoque, in 1805. During the 19th Century the brand became a familiar feature of storied Bohemian cafés and artist salons. To underscore its heritage, the Creator Of art contest will award its First Place winner a cash prize of $1,805; second place $500; and third place $250. These creators will also receive valuable PR in March 2010 when winners are announced. (A celebratory event is being planned concurrent with The Armory Show, the annual international art fair, in New York City.)

January - FOCAL_RESOLUTION-1 (A Photography Show)

David Hockney’s investigations into the use of optics in drawing and painting, and his conclusion that we have an “optical art, not a visual art,” suggest that photography now holds such a place of prominence in our culture that its visual properties have become a guiding expectation in our pictorial perceptions and assessments.
We are looking for any and every type of photography in order to fill this exhibition with as many methods and mediums as we can. Any method for realizing a photographic image or any aesthetic position will be welcomed. Max Ernst said of collage, “Collage is the noble conquest of the irrational, the coupling of two realities, irreconcilable in appearance, upon a plane which apparently does not suit them.” Likewise it could be said of montage that it is an art of connecting disparate parts to create order from difference. And assemblage is an activity of the mind projecting the supernormal in the organization of junk.

March - Zeros + Ones: The Digital Era (A Digital Media Exhibition)

Digitally created artwork has emerged along with the rapid development in computer technology and is showing up in many galleries. As a result, digital media has taken its place beside the rest of world art no longer having to answer to the age old question, “Yes, but is it art?”
WE WILL ACCEPT all forms of digitally created artwork including those created with manipulative programs like Photoshop, et al, or the various digital drawing software available. We will also welcome video and sound art, or any other sort of app or meaning of digital art.

The gallery is dedicated to the presentation and promotion of contemporary visual art in thematic monthly shows. The gallery provides opportunities for artists to exhibit their work within a context of current national and international practice uniting distinctive visions from varied ethnic and cultural contexts. The gallery welcomes all viewpoints and mediums for its exhibition schedule. The gallery’s mission is to provide an opportunity for artists to become showing members in the arts community of New York City, whether they are showing for the first time or have years of exhibition experience.

New York City Location
The gallery is located in the historic Scalamandre Silks Building in Long Island City, one of New York City’s most vibrant arts neighborhoods. With magnificent views of the Manhattan skyline, the building houses art galleries, performing arts spaces, and studios. Nearby are a number of museums including PS1, the Fisher Landau Center for Art, and the Sculpture Center. The greater neighborhood hosts diverse arts activities, a number of art galleries, restaurants and clubs, and riverfront attractions.

Awards
All artists will be accepted as long as they submit before the posted deadline or before the exhibition is at capacity. After the exhibition has opened, 10 artists will be chosen for distinction from each show at climate/gallery by arts professionals from New York City. The gallery will publish a catalogue of the work of the 10 artists which will also include thumbnails of every artists work in the exhibition. The 10 artists will be featured on the gallery’s website indefinitely. The gallery maintains a Flat File of work on paper for invited artists. Artist Representation will be given to selected artists who participate in climate/gallery shows.
